FAQ
Which operations can be performed together with aesthetic nose surgery?
Yes, as you know, rhinoplasty means aesthetic nose surgery. Rhinoplasty, aesthetic nose surgery, septorhinoplasty — they are all the same thing. Together with rhinoplasty, we only perform operations on the sinuses inside the nose, turbinate surgery and turbinate reduction, or, if there is a curvature of the nasal septum such as a deviation, we correct that as well. In general, we do not recommend another additional surgery to our patients very much, because it brings a little more burden. There are those who perform operations such as tonsillectomy at the same time or add other surgeries, but if my patients are going to have aesthetic nose surgery, I advise that only surgeries in anatomically neighboring areas close to that region should be performed, and that others should be postponed to another session because they will bring more burden.
How are snoring problems solved?
Snoring is one of the most important subjects that ENT and head and neck surgery deal with. Snoring is a very difficult symptom. Snoring is actually not a disease but a symptom, and its treatment is truly one of the most difficult conditions. When our patients come with a snoring complaint, we say: 'We will solve this together; there are some things we will do and some things you will do, and we will achieve a result from all of them together.' Based on this, we decide on surgery or on medical treatment. Therefore, a snoring patient is a difficult patient, and the snoring patient's expectations are very high. Snoring is also an area in which patients' high expectations are exploited, so no surgeon, no ENT specialist or specialist in another field can treat snoring one hundred percent; anyone who says they treat it one hundred percent is not telling the truth. Therefore, snoring is a condition that requires a joint result achieved partly by what the physician does and partly by the patient's contribution.
Is non-surgical rhinoplasty possible?
I smile at this question. There is no such thing as non-surgical rhinoplasty; it is not possible. It is contrary to the most basic principles of medicine — it is impossible. Therefore, as I said, non-surgical rhinoplasty is something done to create added value and attract patients; there is no non-surgical rhinoplasty.
Is surgery necessary for sinusitis treatment?
Yes, sinusitis treatment is truly one of the treatments that confuse our patients the most, and I always say this, as I have also stated many times in my previous articles:
Unfortunately, in our country sinusitis is always treated more than necessary. Sinusitis in particular is a subject that is greatly feared among the public, that makes people anxious, and about which they always come to the doctor asking, 'Do I have sinusitis?' We always recommend that sinusitis is first treated with medication, if there is no other underlying cause such as allergy. After treatment with medication, especially after a week or ten days, an X-ray must be taken. We decide how to continue sinusitis treatment according to the result of this X-ray. If surgery is necessary, we of course perform it; but when a patient comes with a first acute sinusitis attack, or a patient with chronic sinusitis comes with an acute attack, sending them for an X-ray immediately and deciding according to its result is wrong. First, medication should be given for about a week or ten days to dry the secretion inside the sinuses, then an X-ray should be taken, and how to continue treatment should be decided according to its result. Our patients generally go to hospital or have an X-ray taken in the acute period. There they see that all the sinuses are full, and surgery is recommended. This generally means treating sinusitis a little more than necessary. This partly stems from market conditions, hospital conditions or the general training of doctors. In my opinion, in sinusitis treatment medication should always be given first, one should wait patiently, then take an X-ray and only then decide what to do. That is why I always tell my patients: do not get more treatment than necessary for sinusitis.
Can the nasal tip be lifted with Botox?
Botox is a chemical agent from the botulinum toxins; it paralyzes smooth muscles, and its effect — the leaflet of the medicine says 6 months, but it is generally around 4 to 6 months — begins to wear off from 4 months and disappears completely at 6 months. Therefore, the result lasts at most about 4 months. Of course it can be done, depending on the patient's expectations and wishes and whether the patient is ready for surgery; this needs to be decided. With Botox, by injecting very lightly into the muscles at the nasal tip and paralyzing them to prevent them from working, it is possible to lift the nose a little, but, as I said, the results may not meet the patient's expectations very well. Therefore, if the patient wants to lift the nasal tip much better, we recommend aesthetic nose surgery.
Is it possible to make permanent changes to the shape of the nose with nasal filler?
Nasal filler is also one of the methods used very effectively in recent years; sometimes it is very useful and sometimes it may not meet the patient's expectations. However, like Botox, it is one of the agents with a temporary effect. You apply nasal filler to the nasal tip, inside the nose or to the nasal bridge, but it has a lifetime. After a certain time it is absorbed by the skin or tissue, so its effect is temporary. As I said, depending on the patient's expectations, you can use Botox together with nasal filler, or if the patient does not want something like aesthetic nose surgery but only small touches, you can use nasal filler together with Botox without any harm. But nasal filler alone, or Botox together with nasal filler, is not a complete aesthetic nose surgery.
Which operations can I have together with rhinoplasty?
Deviation septoplasty, sinusitis surgery, turbinate surgery, other aesthetic procedures of the forehead, eyelids and under-eye area, and other aesthetic procedures of the cheekbones, chin and face can be performed together with rhinoplasty.
